I received a complimentary copy of WHO IS VERA KELLY? by Rosalie Knecht from Tin House Books. I was so intrigued by the title, and the cover. When I read the synopsis, I knew I had to get my hands on a copy of this book.
This is my first novel by Rosalie Knecht.

Overview – Spoiler Alert: Low
New York City, 1962. Vera Kelly is struggling to make rent and blend into the underground gay scene in Greenwich Village. She’s working night shifts at a radio station when her quick wits, sharp tongue, and technical skills get her noticed by a recruiter for the CIA.
Next thing she knows she’s in Argentina, tasked with wiretapping a congressman and infiltrating a group of student activists in Buenos Aires. As Vera becomes more and more enmeshed with the young radicals, the fragile local government begins to split at the seams. When a betrayal leaves her stranded in the wake of a coup, Vera learns the Cold War makes for strange and unexpected bedfellows, and she’s forced to take extreme measures to save herself.

Review – Spoiler Alert: Low
Centered around the Argentinian Revolution of June 1966, Who Is Vera Kelly? is not your typical spy novel, or at least it was not what I was expecting. It is quite an interesting historical fiction meets character study kind of book, mashed together with some espionage and a bit of suspense. The book alternates between Vera’s past ( her formative years, the coming of age part) and present (now a CIA operative).
I was thoroughly pleased and impressed with the atmosphere the author created around the Argentinian Revolution. I am familiar with this part of Argentina’s turbulent past and the historical detail was definitely on point.
This book is a quick read, with short chapters but you will not want to put it down. It is a slow burn, definitely not a female James Bond version of a novel but, it is quite a satisfying read.
